How To Replace Scooter Wheels - If you've had a lot of fun on your scooter this summer, you may have noticed that your wheels are worn or deformed. Wheels that are no longer perfectly round no longer provide a smooth ride, so it may be time to replace them. Grab 2 Allen keys and flip out your old wheels to replace your scooter wheels and be back on the road in no time.
- Removing the old wheels
1. Turn your scooter over so the wheels are facing up. Place your scooter on a level surface. Turn it upside down and balance it on the rear wheel and handlebars with the wheels facing you. This makes working on your scooter much easier.
You can also have a friend hold your scooter up or attach it to a scooter stand.
2. Use 2 Allen keys to loosen the old wheel bolts. Hold an allen wrench in each hand and insert into each bolt head on either side of 1 wheel. Hold one allen wrench while turning the other counterclockwise to completely remove the screws.
You can find allen wrenches at most hardware stores.
3. Pull the axle and screw out of the wheel. The axle is the long helical piece in the center of the wheel. Remove the axle and bolt from the wheel and set aside for later use.
Make sure you keep this hardware in a place where it cannot be lost as you will need it later.
4. Slide your old wheel out of the scooter base. Gently grasp the old wheel and pull towards you to remove it from the scooter. Set the old wheel aside to deal with later.
If your old wheels are noticeably damaged or broken, do not attempt to use them on any other scooter.
You can throw the wheel in the trash or keep it as a souvenir to look back on how much you roughed up your first wheels.
5. Take the bearings out of the old wheel if your new wheel doesn't have them. The bearings are the hollow circles of metal on the inside of the wheel. If your new wheel has these, you don't need to use the ones from your old wheel. If your new wheel doesn't have them, gently tap them out with your allen wrench.

6. Add your wheel bearings to your new wheel if it doesn't have them. Line up the wheel bearing with the hole in the center of your new wheel. Gently tap the bearing in with your allen wrench until it is flush with the surrounding metal. Then tap the other bearing into the other side of the wheel with your allen wrench.
If your new wheel already comes with bearings, you don't need to worry about that.
7. Align your new wheel with the screw holes in the scooter. Grab your new wheel and slide it into place where your old wheel used to be. Use your Allen key to line up the hole in the center of the wheel with the holes in the sides of the scooter.
Make sure your new wheel is the same size and shape as your old wheel.
Your new wheel should also match the rear wheel of your scooter.
8. Slide the axle into the center of the wheel. Grasp the long axle and slide it through the screw holes on the side of the scooter and into the wheel. Make sure it fits through both the scooter and the wheel to keep everything together.
9. Insert the other screw into the other side of the wheel. Take the second bolt and thread it through the other side of the scooter into the wheel. Nest it into the axle so that the bolt and axle connect to hold the wheel.
10. Tighten the screws with an Allen key. Insert 1 Allen key into the axle and 1 Allen key into the screw. Hold the Allen key on the axle while turning the one on the screw clockwise. This will tighten the bolt and hold your new wheel in place.
Make sure your bolts are super tight so your wheel doesn't come loose when you ride your scooter.
