Learning these tricks will build your confidence and prepare you for more advanced tricks like a half cab, a heelwhip, and a fakie.
- Learn Beginner Razor Scooter Tricks
1. Bunny hop to prepare for more complex tricks. Ride your scooter where the ground is wide and level. Drive your scooter at a comfortable speed and when you feel ready, bend your knees and jump in the air. When jumping, pull the handlebars up to pull the scooter deck up with it. Continue to bend your knees as you land back on the ground and slightly push down on the handlebars.
You don't need ramps or hills to bunny hop.
Mastering the bunny hop will help prepare you to learn more complex tricks.
2. Make a guide to ride only on the back wheel of your scooter. Place one foot on the back of your scooter deck and then step off with the other foot. Carefully lift the handlebars so the front wheel is in the air while keeping your other foot off the scooter deck and just off the ground. Use your hands to control the scooter and swing your foot off the deck for balance.
A manual is a great way to practice your balance and learn a transition between different tricks.
3. Try a tire knocker to jump on the back of your scooter. Drive your scooter forward, then put one foot on the brake. Position your other foot so it's resting on the deck just in front of the brake. Pull the handlebars up to raise the front wheel, then step on the brake so your scooter bounces slightly and only the rear wheel touches the ground.
The tire tap also makes a good transition between more complicated tricks.
4. Perform a barspin to learn the basic maneuver for bar tricks. Take your right hand off the handlebars and keep your left hand on it. Then continue to hold the handlebars with your left hand while rotating them as far as you can comfortably. When you cannot turn the handlebar any further, put your right hand under your left arm and grasp the handlebar with your right hand. Take your left hand off the handlebars, and then perform the twist with your right hand. After rotating the handlebars 360°, place your left hand back on the handlebars.
You can start with either your left or right hand as long as you finish the barspin with your other hand. The basic process is the same.
When you first start, practice standing barspins by standing with one foot on the brake and lifting the front of the scooter off the ground.
If you want to barspin while flying, bunny hop as high as you can and finish the barspin while in the air.
- Perform Complex Razor Scooter Tricks
5. Try half a cab to do a bunny jump with a 180° spin. A half cab is a simple and impressive trick! Start by bending your knees and pulling the handlebars up while jumping into a rabbit jump. Rotate your body 180° while jumping to completely change your direction. Land on the ground like you're doing a bunny hop, with your knees bent and the handlebars pressed toward the ground.
Try to jump as high as possible to give yourself enough time to change direction.
6. Perform a heel whip to do a bunny hop with a 360° rotation. Begin by doing a bunny hop and jumping as high as you can in the air. While you are airborne, use your left heel to kick the scooter deck firmly so that it spins by 360° in an anticlockwise direction. When your scooter deck has rotated a full 360°, place both feet back on and land with your knees bent.
As the scooter deck rotates, hold the handlebars firmly with both hands to keep your body in the same position.
It's best to practice a heel-whip on flat ground first before you move onto trying it on ramps.
7. Do a fakie to drive your scooter backwards. Slowly drive your scooter forward and gently pull up on the handlebars, lifting the deck off the ground. Jump off the deck slightly while lifting it and use the foot that is in the front of the deck to push it so it rotates 180°, flipping the deck so the rear wheel leads forward. With the scooter deck directly in front of you, place the foot that you used to rotate the deck down and as close to the handle as possible.
Keep the foot that isn't rotating the deck just off the ground as the deck changes direction.
When you land, just keep riding your scooter, but with the deck in front of you, not behind you!
If you want to return to your original position, just do the same. Pull the handlebars up, jump off the deck and push the deck to rotate it 180°. Then land back on the scooter and continue driving normally.
8. Try riding hands-free to practice your balance. First, ride your scooter on level ground at a comfortable speed. Lift the handlebar very slightly and rotate it 180° with one hand. If your handlebars are wrong, simply remove the one hand remaining on the handlebars and sink your weight onto the scooter deck on your back foot. Align your back shoulder with your back foot and balance for as long as you can!
It's important to put as much weight on the back foot as possible, as that's where your center of balance is.
Rotating the handlebars backward allows you to steer with the weight in your back foot. Tilt your weight slightly to either side to guide your scooter when riding hands-free.
While it may seem scary, all you need to start driving hands-free is a little confidence!
